James B. Herrick

James Herrick was born in 1837 to a wealthy and socially comfortable family in New York City.  He received his education at Columbia College and the University of Virginia, where he was awarded a degree in theology in 1860.  After receiving his degree he led a congregation in New York City, married and had five children.  He converted to Perfectionism and joined the Oneida Community in 1868, leaving behind his wife and five children.  He was formally divorced in 1873, with the proviso that he have no contact with his children.

He had a turbulent relationship with Tirzah Miller whom he married at the break-up.  They had two daughters together, one in the Community, Hilda, and one child after the break up, Winifred.   He remained close to John Humphrey Noyes in Niagara Falls, Ontario, serving as his personal secretary.

He died at the age of 74 and is buried in the Community Cemetery.
